Passivhaus

Network Five director Donald Bentley is a Certified European Passivhaus Designer with qualification from Strathclyde University and The Passivahuas Institut  in Darmstadt, Germany.

A Passivhaus (or Passive Building) is constructed with meticulous attention to detail and a rigorous design method to achieve exceptionally low energy needs.  Passivhaus is based on over 30 years of building science research and thousands of completed projects.

Passivhaus buildings achieve circa 75% reduction in space heating compared to current UK standards for new houses.  The Passivhaus method is appropriate to both new build, extensions and refurbishment.

To achieve the Passivhaus standard in the UK climate typically involves:

  • very high levels of insulation
  • extremely high performance windows (triple glazed)
  • avoiding air leakage in the construction
  • ‘thermal bridge’ free floor, walls and roof
  • very efficient heat recover ventilation
